I recently wrote an in-depth article on this history of skateboarding sneakers for Route One Magazine that can be read here. The first skateboarding sneaker was created by the Randolph Rubber Company in 1965, but shortly afterwards, two brothers with the last name Van Doren left the company to start their own brand in Anaheim, California.

By the late 1970’s Vans was the number one name in skateboarding sneakers thanks the brand’s local grassroots marketing and affiliations with Tony Alva and Stacey Peralta. Here’s a group of Vans advertisements from 1977 – 1978 that served as inspiration for the Classic Kicks collaborations we released in 2008.
