“Rossi and Martini sippin, Sergio Tacchini flipping mad pies” – Nas
Before sneaker companies had tennis players also wearing their apparel, Sergio Tacchini was at the top of the luxury tennis market of the 1970’s and 1980’s along with the likes of FILA, Ellesse, and Le Coq Sportif. Before John McEnroe wore his complete Mac Attack collection, he was wearing Nike shoes with a Sergio Tacchini jacket.
The ads shown here are from 1988 – 1990 and reflect tennis’ neon phase. We have Mats Wilander, Gabriela Sabatini and Pat Cash anchoring the collections. For more on the tennis style from this period, check out this piece I wrote for Sneaker Freaker.
